Bookmaker Backed A Broodmare Winner With Busking

Former Canberra bookmaker Michael Thomas has been breeding and racing horses for over 30 years and has hit the jackpot with progeny from his now deceased broodmare Busking.

Busking, by Encosta De Lago, is now the dam of two Group winners bred and raced by Thomas, headed by his popular dual G1 winner Happy Clapper.

Busking became the producer of a second Group winner for Thomas on Saturday when Happy Clapper’s half brother Not A Single Cent won the G2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes at Flemington.

Epsom Handicap winner Happy Clapper captured his second G1 prize at Randwick on Saturday in the Canterbury Stakes, taking the 7YOs earnings to a whopping $3,875,800.

Both Happy Clapper (Teofilo) and Not A Single Cent (Not A Single Doubt) were produced by the Encotsa De Lago mare Busking before she died in died in January of 2017.

Thomas’s association with her family stretches back to the 1980s when Keith Dryden told his brother Paul, also a bookmaker, that there was a good horse called Vale Nymph which had all the attributes to make a good broodmare,” Thomas recalled.

“We were young and bold and thought we’d have a go and she ended up producing five winners for us including Green Waters, who was multiple stakes placed.

“Another was Winifred’s Prayer who also left five winners, including the Group winner Thankgodyou’rehere who came close to being my first Group One winner when second in the Galaxy.

“I sent Winifred’s Prayer to Encosta de Lago when he was standing for just $7000 and sold the resultant filly who was Busking for $40,000 as a yearling.

“Busking eventually ended up with Darley but when they did a cull of their mares I picked her up at a 2010 broodmare sale in foal to Teofilo for $13,000.

“She was carrying Happy Clapper.”

Thomas sent Busking to Not A Single Doubt in 2014 and 2015, producing a pair of colts, the first of them being Not A Single Cent.

“Happy Clapper’s career hadn’t really kicked in when Not A Single Cent became a yearling so I decided to sell the colt at the Magic Millions,” Thomas said.

“He ended up being purchased by Ciaron Maher for $280,000 and I decided to keep 25 percent.

Thomas now keeps only one broodmare, a half sister to Busking called Offer It Up.

Race Synopsis: Last year's Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Happy Clapper, who was having his first start since runner-up in the Emirates Stakes (registered as L K S Mackinnon Stakes) (Gr 1, 2000m) at Flemington on 11 November, was an impressive first up winner here. He settled back in fifth place, on the rails, tracking a quick tempo. Blake Shinn angled him deeper and into clear running at the 300m and he sprinted quickly, hit the front at the 50m and went on to score a very good win in course record time. Global Glamour again went to the front, set a quick pace, grabbed a clear break at the 300m and was only overtaken at the 50m after her early efforts for a very good second in a fast-run race. Invincible Gem raced back in sixth place, one off the rails, to the home turn and did well in running on to take the minor placing.
